Wismar, January 5, 2026 – On January 5, 2026, around 140 new employees began work at the TKMS site in Wismar. This brings the total number of employees at TKMS Wismar to over 400, and the site will be developed into a hybrid shipyard for future submarine and surface vessel projects over the next few years. With its spacious premises, sufficient steel production capacities, and excellent infrastructure, the shipyard offers optimal location factors and is set to become one of the largest TKMS locations in Germany alongside Kiel.
“We are delighted to welcome so many new employees to Wismar. The increase in personnel is not only important for TKMS and the development of the site, but also for the city of Wismar and the eastern German coastal region,“ explains Dr. Dirk Steinbrink, CTO of TKMS. ”With the upgrading of our shipyard, we will gradually create up to 1,500 jobs in Wismar by the end of 2029, depending on the order situation. In addition, our record order book will keep production running at full capacity for the next few years and create good prospects for our employees.”
Since the beginning of last year, parts of the shipyard have been upgraded for TKMS's product portfolio. Investments of over 200 million euros are planned for this in the coming years, including the modernization of the hall infrastructure and the installation of the new production line for submarines. The current plan is to manufacture several underwater projects (including the 212CD option boats for Germany) and parts of the possible F127 frigate project, as well as the new Polarstern, at the Wismar site. The expansion of the Wismar site will thus provide TKMS with additional capacity and support the scheduled processing of the order backlog.
TKMS is well positioned for the future
TKMS's order backlog remains at a record level of around €18.2 billion (as of September 30, 2025). Last year, the Group won several key projects: The number of 212CD submarines ordered from TKMS for the German Navy rose from two to a total of six submarines. With Norway's announcement of an order extension for two submarines, the German-Norwegian 212CD program has reached its planned maximum order volume of twelve submarines. In addition, there is an order from the German Navy to modernize six Type 212A submarines and the contract for the research icebreaker “Polarstern” in the surface area. Internationally, the delivery of two submarines to an Asian customer expands the portfolio. Potential orders from Canada and ongoing contract negotiations with India underscore the future growth potential.
